Skyline 7/8 Youth Win Clash Winter Indoor D2 Championship

The Skyline Spartans Senior 7/8 indoor team played it's first season in the Clash Indoor Winter League this November through January and clinched the "D2" Championship this Saturday.

The Spartans were coached by Head Coach Jack Pruitt and Assistant Coach Rene Cespedes.

The 2011/12 Spartans Players were Christopher Bechtel, Blake Carpenter, William Cespedes, Cameron DeWeirdt, Ricky Dua, Nolan Eggert, Dylan Gross, Mitchell Larson, Bennett Lees, Jack McCarthy, Ben Mix, Bryce Noonan, Joey Rosauer, Andrew Schweitzer, Garrett Strand, Trevor West, Tanner Wilkins and Dalen Wuehler.

It's Holiday Game Time!!

The Annual Skyline Spartans High School Varsity vs Spartans Alumni match is set for Tuesday, December 27th at the Skyline Community Fields starting at Noon and running to 3:00 PM. The 2011 Varsity roster has been set by Coach K and those participating players have been notified.

The Varsity/Alumni match will be followed on Thursday, December 29th with the Spartans High School Club/Alumni Round Robin tourney which starts at Noon and runs to 4:00 PM on the Skyline Community Fields. All registered Skyline Spartan High School laxers (Rising Freshmen - Seniors) are invited and encouraged to participate. The Club will host a BBQ for the participating players following the match featuring their killer hot sandwiches from Big House BBQ who will be set up at the fields for the tourney. Make sure you RSVP to Varsity Captain Jack Pruitt for this so we can help Big House get the goodies right.

The Spartan Senior 7/8 Green team delivered two strong Fall Ball wins this Sunday over Bellevue Blue and Issaquah Gold to a great crowd of Skyline Lacrosse fans.

The Skyline Spartan's Senior Black 7/8 Youth team was in GELL Fall League action this last weekend at Kirkland's Lake Washington HS stadium. They played an excellent match against Bellevue before taking on a Woodinville semi-select team (Woodinville does not field a select A team so all their best players are competing in the regular bracket).

The Skyline lacrosse community congratulates Jack Pruitt, Max Saffle and Brennan West on their Achievements! Here are the details on each Spartan in alphabetical order:

The 2010 edition of the Overlake Outdoor Team Fall League starts September 18th and runs every Saturday through November 13th on the Overlake School turf field.

All games start at either 11:00 AM, Noon or 1:00 PM and will be 12 minute running clock quarters. Teams previously committed to the Fall Ball season include Skyline, Issaquah, Northshore, Lake Washington, Mukilteo, Lynnwood, Woodinville, Eastside Catholic, Snohomish and Eastlake. Registration for the Skyline Fall League team is on the Skyline website and fees are $75 per player. You will need to have a current Lystedt concussion form on file with SLC and a valid US Lacrosse membership.

Skyline laxers grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible along with rising Skyline bound freshmen (graduating 8th grade in the '09/'10 school year). Sign-up priority is given to current Sophmores - Seniors then incoming Freshmen will be added as space allows. There are no practices and unlike the highly flexible Summer Ball schedule which anticipates some vacation & camp conflicts, players who commit should plan on participating each Saturday.

The summer league @ Overlake is a great opportunity to play with your Spartan teammates in a more informal league format which combines rising freshmen with current Skyline 10, 11 and rising 12th grade players. The team is run by the upper classmen at each game. If you are in town we do expect you to show up and play but we also expect you to miss for vacation, camps, and other formal league play.

We've had an amazing season! In our first year in Washington, we won our division and earned the #1 seed in the NLL playoffs. We beat the Minnesota Swarm in the first round on Saturday, and now we're getting ready to take on Edmonton in the semi-finals. As players, we feed off of the energy you've been giving us all year by your awesome support at Comcast Arena. And this Saturday, our game comes to KEY ARENA in Seattle for the first-ever professional lacrosse game at The Key!

Making this year even better for us has been the close relationship we have developed with Issaquah Youth Lacrosse and Skyline Lacrosse Club. We have truly enjoyed working with the players, coaches and parents of these great programs this year. Tonight Skyline Lacrosse kicks off its 2010 season with its first league games, against Northshore. JV game starts at 6:15; varsity at 8:00; both games are in the stadium at Skyline.

Northshore is an important early matchup for the Spartans. Picked to finish 5th in Division I by West Side Lax (http://www.westsidelax.com/

Preview), Northshore is led by brothers Taylor Wisman and Foster Wisman, both picked as pre-season all-state candidates (http:// www.whsbla.org/Sunday%20Stroll/2010%20Stroll/2010%20DI%20Preview.htm). Taylor (no.11) is a do-everything senior middie who finished in the top four in goals (second), points (fourth) and ground balls (third) in the division last year. Foster (no. 22) is also a middie, and as a sophomore last year had 42 points and 27 ground balls while missing two games to injury. Senior attackman Jake Dosett (no. 19) is another scoring threat, with 35 points last year. Coach Steve Wisman was the 2008 coach of the year, when Northshore won the Division II title. In 2009, Northshore finished sixth in their first year in Divison I, just ahead of the seventh place Spartans. In their only matchup, Northshore defeated Skyline 15-7. Northshore did have some significant graduation losses and several players also moved to the new Woodinville Division II program which started up this year.

The "Lax Apple Cup" match between the UW Huskies and WSU Cougars scheduled for February 20th has been replaced by a UW - Central Washington University Wildcats matchup. The Huskies/Wildcats matchup is same time/same place - Feb 20th at 7:00 PM at Eastside Catholic School.

Hello Skyline Lacrosse Players,

I trust everyone had a pleasant holiday break and are now ready to get to work!

Captains will soon be reaching out to you with practice schedules and additional conditioning opportunities and I trust that you will all realize the importance of attending these sessions. I can tell you that come March I will expect everyone to have done the stick and skill work necessary to be ready for the season. I will not be using practice time on skill progression as that is the responsibilty of individual players. We will be introducing new systems both offensively and defensively and will not slow down because some players did not approach the season with the same level of commitment as others. Everyone within this program should be well-versed on wall ball drills and techniques and can look at various web-sites to learn more interesting wall ball drills....

Please make sure you are working on your stick continually over the next couple of months and anyone who was on varsity last year should probably have 2 heads that they can reliably catch and pass with.

This week IYL Co-Presidents Matthew Balkman and Scott Wiley announced a transition in IYL leadership in a letter to friends of Issaquah Youth Lacrosse. Stepping into their new role as Co-Presidents Emeritus, Matthew and Scott set the stage for IYL's continued growth -

In their words [partial excerpt]:

"When we assembled a group of a dozen middle-school boys for their first Lacrosse clinic six years ago, we had no idea how or even if Lacrosse could take root and grow in Issaquah. It wasn't until the next clinic – a couple of months later -- when nearly 100 kids attended that we knew Lacrosse was destined to be the next great thing in youth sports.

Issaquah Youth Lacrosse was born in 2004 to foster the growth and development of our youth through the fun and fellowship of a great team sport. IYL as an organization has experienced steady and exponential growth, we have had many IYL players go on to compete in HS State Championships, some go on to play at the collegiate level, and the overall awareness and love of the game expand tremendously in our community. It has been very exciting!

Now, as we look forward to our sixth full season having served nearly a thousand boys and girls, and grown a program which now feeds four boys HS programs (Liberty and Mt Si in ’10) and one girls HS program, it's time to turn to the next chapter for IYL.

With our registrations on track to deliver the largest group of participants ever in our Spring 2010 season and with a strong transitional leadership team in place, IYL will surely continue to be the leading youth Lacrosse program in the state. And with the vision and energy that the new leadership is bringing to their work, we expect IYL to go places we could never have dreamed of back in 2004 with those dozen 8th graders awkwardly picking up Lacrosse sticks for the first time.

The Skyline Spartans Lacrosse team helped Issaquah Schools Foundation net a record fundraising night on Tuesday (20th): $54,000 raised!

Here is the word from ISF Co-Chair Deborah Parsons:

"Amazing job last night! With fewer students than ever before, we raised more money than ever before: $54,000!!

I saw so much enthusiasm in the room, and the cowbells were ringing all the time. You all looked like you were having fun, and for a great cause!

Thank you all for spending the evening raising money for the Issaquah schools. Without you, this event would not be possible."

Stealth Clinic @ Overlake with Ben Hunt & Jason Bloom

The Washington Stealth will be holding two lacrosse clinics for Fall Ball players this Saturday, 24th at the Overlake School. Stealth stars Ben Hunt and Jason Bloom will be running the free clinics and they are open to anyone, not just the Fall Ball regulars - so invite your regular season teammates!!

The Stealth clinics will be an hour in length and take place from 1:00 - 2:00 PM and again at 3:00 - 4:00 PM to give all the Fall Ball players a chance to attend. The clinics will cover all aspects of lax play as well as drills for players & coaches to use during the off-season.

Ben Hunt will also be meeting players & signing autographs @ Breakaway's Bellevue store on Saturday between 10:00 - 11:00 AM so swing by on your way to Overlake...

Zackery Lystedt Law & Skyline Lacrosse

On July 26th, 2009 Washington State House Bill 1824 – also known as the Zackery Lystedt Law – went into effect. As a result youth sports organizations state-wide are focusing attention and educational resources on the risk of head injuries. This law directly affects Skyline Spartans Lacrosse, Spartans head injury policies and our 2010 player registration processes.

All Washington lacrosse clubs and associations must now follow all steps outlined below to ensure they are compliant with the law. The two requirements that directly affect registration processes include:

1. Annually require all players and the parent(s)/guardian(s) of those players to sign and return an informed consent form relating to the nature and risk of concussion or head injury. This information sheet shall include the signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury and will be provided at the time of registration.

2. Ensuring that all coaches (paid or volunteer) are educated in the nature and risk of concussion or head injury prior to the first practice/competition. This education shall include signs and symptoms of concussion/brain injury. Resources for this education are available in both English and Spanish in the Documents section on this site.

As a Spartans parent or athlete, the information on head injuries we are providing on the Skyline Spartans web site [Spartans>Documents] is important to review and understand. The new registration procedures are in effect for our 2010 season and are an important part of this effort. The risks of concussion or other brain injury have not suddenly increased but youth sports organizations, medical professionals and government policy-makers are making brain injury awareness and education a top priority for good reason. As parents we invest a lot into our young athletes and as athletes we invest a lot into our sports - knowing the symptoms of sports and recreation related brain injury is an important part of that investment.So dedicate 10 minutes to reviewing the Parents and Athletes Concussion Fact-sheets, print them out and tape on the fridge....
